We are back in MA! The train is definitely the way to go, even w/ the stress of worrying about missing it :)

Christmas in NY was good - it was nice seeing everyone! And I got many nice presents, including many, many books, winter breeches, and a couple of gift certs to tack stores! Woot!

And we got to see my step-brother-in-law's pug and French bulldog!! They were awesome.

Last night we all went into the city (have I mentioned just how much I HATE NYC?? If not, I do.) and saw Cirque de Soleil's Wintuk, which was ok. I was expecting something sorta more out there and amazing, and it was mainly meh. I mean, the things they did were neat, but I don't think they were any cooler than acrobats in a normal circus.

Tomorrow, the dentist. And the appts are at 7am, not 7:30 like I thought, so we have to get up even earlier thasn we would have to for work, which is so not fair since we're both off work!!

Happy Two Days After Christmas!!! I hope everyone had a great Christmas :)

We're heading back to MA today - DH's mom is actually driving us from LI to Penn Station, so PLEASE cross your fingers that traffic isn't bad, as no one is as paranoid as I am, so we're only leaving two hours before our train leaves, which is making me horribly nervous. So cross your fingers that we don't miss our train...

And that I find a way to shove like 20 hardcover books into my luggage, because I am not going to be parted from them to ship them back to ourselves!

Ok, "see" you in MA!

(also, since the 12 days of Christmas just barely started, I am not ditching my Christmas icons yet, so don't yell at me!)

So yesterday was the day of Librarian movies. Today has been Sherlock Holmes day - TCM is doing a Basil Rathbone marathon, and my parents took me to see the new Guy Ritchie flick.

It is worth seeing. OH YES. There are things that could've been done better, and casting choices that might've been changed, but it was incredibly faithful to the spirit of dear Sir Arthur and his characters and plots, and what elaborations were made were worthwhile ones.

I approve heartily.

It's sort of hard to watch the TCM movies after that now. As much as I adore Basil Rathbone as Holmes, I despise the treatment of Watson in his movies, and I judge my Holmes adaptations on Watson. (Which is a large part of why I loved the new movie.)

Also, it's just weird to watch the Rathbone movies, because they're set in the Forties. It's a bit of cognitive dissonance.

ETA: Incidentally, I just realised that Rachel McAdams in the new movie looks a whole lot like That Woman in the Rathbone movies, or at least Dressed to Kill. Yet another reference to previous Holmesiana. I applaud them.

(the previews were rather awesome, too. There are several movies I'm going to have to see, at least on DVD - Wolfman, Sorcerer's Apprentice (despite the Nic Cage silliness), and yes, even Clash of the Titans. That one is absolutely going to make me CRY, but after seeing the preview, I'm reasonably certain I can make a mental case for it being a Completely Different Movie That Happens To Share A Title With My Favourite Harryhausen Flick, damnit. That'll help matters.)

Happy Boxing Day, all!

Or, if you have TCM on, happy Sherlock Holmes day! All-day marathon, apparently. Which shall be broken up when my parents and I head out to see the new Holmes movie. That should be interesting...

Merry Christmas to me - TNT is showing all three of the Librarian movies back to back. And my mum has a DVR that has a built-in DVD burner. Oooooh yeah.

The lights on my parents' tree just clicked on, and the house smells like beef stew and cookies.

Oh yeah, this is nice.

Brief end of year update:

1) I got married in October. YAY!

2) I still have a job (not really in danger, but since I work for a bank, I'll take it as a positive). YAY!

3) I have, using the official term from my cardiologist, "fully recovered" from Idiopathic Cardiomyopathy and the associated diagnosis of Congestive Heart Failure! YAY! (The cardiologist believes it was all a stress-induced condition, so I'm going to be spending the rest of my life watching out for stress, but that's a very small price to pay for being "fully recovered.")

4) I've been accepted into an MBA program and am starting - VERY PART TIME (see above note on stress) - in January. YAY! Wait, what? ;-) (This will make College Degree #6, for those keeping score.)

5) I turned 39-Mark-I in November. YAY! (If I use the official number, this would be placed on my list of negatives.) ;-)

While every year has its ups and downs, and I've had my share of both this year, the positives far outweigh the negatives. I hope you and yours take the time to appreciate all of the positives over the last year, but do keep the negatives in mind so as to minimize them in the new year.

Happy Holidays, everyone!

Thanks for all the crossed fingers - my feet were fine last night!

and no, Flitwick stayed at home for the trip - he's too new and shiny for me to want to travel w/ him just yet. I don't like to travel w/ things I like, for fear of losing them - Dh's lucky I let him come w/ me ;)

So! MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE!!!!!!! SANTA COMES TONIGHT!!!!!!!!

For all those travelling today and tomorrow - have good trips!

(see how much more Christmasy actually sleeping more than 2 hours makes me?)

On Long Island. I was nearly killed by the cold I was forced to walk like 90 blocks through, dragging a very heavy suitcase, after getting off the train, so refused to leave the house today. So far it's working - Dh even went and brought back pizza and garlic knots.

To top that off, and probably because of it, i had NONSTOP foot cramps all night last night. I got like 2 hours of sleep, and ended up getting the worst headache of my life thanks to the sobbing in pain I did most of the night. Ugh. So today I feel awful and not at all Christmasy.

Anyway, the train from Boston was nice - very soothing! I love trains. I'm glad we decided to take it this year.

Keep your fingers crossed that my feet behave tonight?

And also, I know I rode on Sat to make up for not being in state last night, but I was very sad to not have had my lesson last night! I was left feeling very out of sorts when I saw by my watch that I should have been riding!!

also, do not try to rob my house while I am gone - the neighbors are watching it, and they are fierce ;)

also, sorry for the typos - DH's laptop keyboard hates me.

First two responses in from my Catchn.net media blast, round one.

There'll be a very brief (250-word) writeup in a local weekly classified/local news sheet. More excitingly, I'll be interviewed next week for a short feature to run in January in the Advocate Weekly, an arts-focused regional weekly that's distributed throughout the Berkshires.

I'm still hoping to get a few more hits, but so far, this is it. I'll need to revamp the press release and send another batch out after the holidays, to try to get another hit or two. And, of course, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again - I'll blast the same media outlets again in six months or so with a new release.

I am going to build Catchn into something wonderful. That's all there is to it.

FRIDAY! [Dec. 22nd, 2009|07:57 am]

rolypolypony
Ok, not really Friday, but MY Friday! I'm leaving at 11:15, which will hopefully get us to Alewife and then to South Station in time for our 1:15 train. It really should be, as Alewife is like 20 min from here, and Alewife to South Station is like 30 min.

Eeep - Cathy and Leslie are trying to force me to leave at 11! They don't want us to miss our train. Too funny! I'm telling you - I am the model of rationality here! ;)

I am all confused - DH dropped me off, which was weird, it's Tuesday but I won't be riding, which is weird, and I'm leaving at 11:15. I'm all confused! And sure that I forgot to pack something. I hate packing. Hate it.

Someone posted a chocolate brownie cake recipe and now I WANT it. NOW. Maybe I can make it for New Year's? Though a New Year's party is not the best time for a cake-cake. Cupcakes, yes, but an actual cake? I dunno. Maybe I can make it down at DH's mom's.

My new computer continues to amaze me - this will not sound like a big deal to you all, but I can connect it to an external monitor and CLOSE THE LID!! Amazing. I can't w/ my iBook, as it cools through the keyboard. And since Flitwick is able to run the latest iTunes, I actually get to use that neato Genius function that creates playlists based on a specific song, which is just the COOLEST thing ever.

Ok, time to eat my muffin...um, I mean work...

OH! This computer is the gift that keeps on giving! After Christmas, I had planned to start saving up for a computer, in hopes of buying one this time next year, but now I can save up and buy both a new riding helmet AND field boots! I need a new helmet sooner rather than later, but I figured w/ saving for the computer, the boots would have to wait quite awhile.

Of course, good luck to me finding boots to fit my giant foot and skinny long calf.

What did I forget to pack for NY? I know I brought enough shirts/pants/sweaters, but I honestly can't tell you if any of them will actually go together....

Anne and Vic just got the results of Anne's PET scan. The cancer is in or on her spine and also on or next to her aorta. Very bad news. She's already started chemo, thanks to all the generous people who donated, some of whom are you lovely people reading this, and now they'll ramp up on the chemo and add radiation. I happened to go over to talk to Vic at lunch time and found her on the phone with Anne, as she found out. :(

It will take a miracle at this point, so if you pray, will you please pray for one for Anne?

Happy Solstice/Giftmas/Mithrastide/Christmas/holidays to me! I have a paid account again!

Courtesy of three very generous souls with LJ discount coupons, I was able to afford a year of paid time. (Afford, of course, being a relative term, but this came out of my PayPal, so it doesn't count as real money...)

All my icons are back! My lovely, lovely iconses! And the ads are gone! Praise be, the ads are gone! YAYYYYY!

(I can totally live without paid LJ. It's just...this is my major mode of social interaction anymore, y'know? I spend a lot of time on here. It's nice to have the place clean and neat again, hehe)
