It's raining into the hallway just outside my cube. The ceiling's looking a little scary right there. Good thing we have overly large recycling bins available.

Wow. Every year, I forget the special kind of crazy that is the grocery store on the day before Thanksgiving. It's like willful denial. You'd think I'd remember this, and do my shopping the weekend before, but no, it always seems like a good idea to do it the day before the holiday when I have it off...

The woman in front of me paid $75 for a not so large organic turkey at Whole Foods. I think I'm glad I've never been in charge of buying a turkey.

And once again, my fellow citizens disappoint. At least it was a 53 to 47 margin. So I guess only a slight majority of us are bigots and/or sheep easily led by ridiculously inaccurate campaign ads. Bleh.

And I have "Here Comes Santa Claus" stuck in my head after the morning show did a segment on Christmas shopping creep. Sigh.

Also news induced, this time from NPR: when am I going to stop being surprised that something that happened twenty years ago is well within the timeframe of things I can easily remember? Twenty years seems so long ago, but when you slap a date on it, it's 1989, and that somehow seems like yesterday!

I follow this blog mostly for her travel photos, but today's post from her latest trip to Estonia really ramped up my blogenvy:

I need this woman's travel budget.

I just caught myself doing full, emotive, arm flapping, talking with my hands at the end of a data exchange call with one of my off site coworkers. I can only pray no one walked by my cube...

I seem to have misplaced last week. We had Karen in, visiting from England, and spent three days Downeast. There was shopping, good food and a good deal of walking around Portland once we were back down here. I feel like I did a lot, and yet, I feel like it was just yesterday we picked her up at Logan and had dinner in the North End. How was that an entire week ago?

And I just made my last student loan payment.

My respect for Real Simple magazine increased expontentially today, when I found a quote from Babylon 5 in this month's issue.

So apparently they're canceling Reading Rainbow at least partially because of a shift in educational focus to the basic mechanics of reading, rather than the enjoyment of it. Has no one picked up on the fact that you can teach kids to read all you want, but it they don't give a crap about what they're reading, they'll only read when forced? I know more than one adult that fits that bill...

That'll teach me to look forward to the AC at work. Apparently they had to turn it off at some point this weekend, so it's still catching up. I'm assured it's much less like a sauna than it was even an hour ago. I'm just glad I have a desk fan.

I'm not sure what's worse: the fact that it's freezing in here, or the fact that since the forecast for the week was relatively warm, I knew the AC here would be wonky, and therefore brought in a sweater for just in case on Monday.

Don't get me wrong, I love the AC, but I don't understand the innerworkings of its thermostat.

Despite the fact that I am not built like a plank, J Crew and the Gap are back in my good graces for the moment. I think I've done my part in stimulating the Maine economy today...

I just checked my records to verify this theory, but apparently I must start off any at home vacation week with a $50+ Target binge. I swear I decided to go there because I just needed two things (one of which was actually out of stock, even).

If someone bottled their mojo, I could totally catch myself a sugar daddy.

So very jet lagged....

And I have twice caught myself looking out a window and being very confused by the lack of looming volcano on the horizon. :)

This should be an interesting day. I have a ton to do, and I'm really, really antsy, because I'm going to HAWAII!! Hopefully I can channel this into some massive productivity. Otherwise, my head may explode :)

Well, I guess I understand the allure of this internet genealogy stuff. I was on Ancestry.com last night on a whim, and assuming the distant cousin whose tree I stumbled upon knows her shit, I just got a tree branch back to the Mayflower and beyond in one evening.

I'm going to be sacreligious and be secretly ok with the fact that the weather's shit. The free membership is only for 14 days ;)

Deep question of the day [Jun. 24th, 2009|08:42 am]
When it's this wet outside, why are my hands so incredibly dry?

I have never cried so much at a cartoon as I cried at Up last night.  It was great, but has no business being that much of a tear-jerker!

So apparently (in my family at least), family 8-hour one way road trips do not get less snipy even when everyone involved is finally an adult.

I'm soooo glad I took today off as a recovery day...

If you like gardens, I have some pictures of the Eastman House grounds:
